The sound of the waves: the neuroscience of coastal relaxation

Waves produce a sound with very specific characteristics:

  • A broad spectrum: low frequencies (deep, in the background) mixed with high frequencies (from the foam).
  • A slow, regular rhythm: 6 to 12 beats per minute, close to the resting breathing rate.
  • Intensità moderata: between 50 and 75 decibels.

Perché il cervello lo ama

Neurologically, the sound of waves activates the parasympathetic nervous system, responsabile dello stato di riposo e digestione (l’opposto del “fight-or-flight”).

  • The default mode networkis activated, the neural network associated with free thought and introspection.
  • Si riduce l’attività dell’amygdala, responsabile dell’allerta.
  • Salivary cortisol drops within 10 to 20 minutes.

An interesting finding: after a few minutes of listening to the sea, breathing tends to lock on al ritmo delle onde.

  • Time dilation: the perception of time by the sea stretches, for reasons that are not yet entirely clear.

How to make the most of it

  • Sleep with the window open nelle notti calme: il suono delle onde migliora la qualità del sonno profondo.
  • Meditate at the water's edge for 10 minutes in the morning: no technique needed, just sit.
  • Listen with your eyes closed: l’effetto è più rapido se si tolgono gli altri input sensoriali.
  • Walk without your phone: the benefit requires the absence of other sound sources.

Five days are enough
