La macchia mediterranea non è una singola pianta: è una comunità vegetale. Conoscere le dieci specie più comuni significa poter “leggere” qualunque passeggiata costiera nel sud Sardegna. Ecco il nostro mini-catalogo da leggere in cinque minuti, portarsi dietro in spiaggia, e usare come guida.
1. Myrtle (Myrtus communis)
Small, round, glossy leaves. White flowers in June, blue-black berries in autumn. The basis of the liqueur of the same name.
2. Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum)
A silver-grey cushion with small yellow flowers. A warm, spicy scent, almost of curry. It grows on the cliffs.
3. Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus)
Arbusto resinoso dalle foglie composte. Resina balsamica (il “mastice”). Frutti neri a grappoletti.
4. Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo)
An evergreen tree up to five metres. Edible grainy red fruits. White bell-shaped flowers in autumn.
5. Prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus)
Arbusto spinoso dalle bacche rosse. Cresce sulle dune costiere. Dà stabilità al terreno ed è pianta pioniera del litorale.
6. Rockrose (Cistus monspeliensis, Cistus creticus)
Pink or white five-petalled flowers like tissue paper. It secretes labdanum, an aromatic resin used in perfumery. The first to grow back after fires.
7. Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus)
Linear needles, pale blue flowers. It grows both wild and cultivated. A cornerstone and aromatic base of Mediterranean cooking.
8. Tree spurge (Euphorbia dendroides)
Arbusto alto 1-2 metri con foglie lineari. A fine primavera perde le foglie e diventa rosso-arancio: un’esplosione di colore lungo le scogliere. Linfa tossica — non toccare.
9. Wild olive (Olea europaea var. sylvestris)
Antenato selvatico dell’olivo. Foglie grigio-argento, portamento contorto. Vive centinaia d’anni.
10. Dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops humilis)
The only native European palm. It grows in low clumps, with fan-shaped leaves. A protected plant in nature areas.
How to use this guide
Prova a riconoscere tre piante durante la prima passeggiata, cinque la seconda, otto la terza. La macchia smette di essere un “insieme” e diventa un linguaggio.
